Reporter: I have a question to Robert and to Scarlett. Firstly to Robert, throughout Iron Man 1 and 2, Tony Stark started off as a very egotistical character but learns how to fight as a team. And so how did you approach this role, bearing in mind that kind of maturity as a human being when it comes to the Tony Stark character, and did you learn anything throughout the three movies that you made?

And to Scarlett, to get into shape for Black Widow did you have anything special to do in terms of the diet, like did you have to eat any specific food, or that sort of thing?

Scarlett: How come you get the really interesting existential question, and I get the like, “rabbit food” question?

The respect given to you if you’re a man in the entertainment business, and the respect given to you if you’re a woman in the entertainment business: all perfectly summed up in one idiotically thought out line of questioning.

You know, I always did like Scarlett Johannson.

There’s, there’s length. There’s different size curls.

One of the biggest challenges was animating Merida’s hair. In fact, it was so difficult that Merida’s hair was actually considered to be its own character and the Pixar team created a new process to make the hairdo, um, do. From Claudia:

The curls themselves are really tightly wound curls, but the movement of her overall curl is nice and soft. And there’s also these hairs that break away from her silhouette to show her wildness, her adventurousness, and that’s kind of the key look for Merida’s hair that we had to hit when we designed her. So, as a groomer, this is what I would see in the computer… I would take her scalp and basically grow curls off of her head and detail exactly how those curls grow.

The groomer who actually worked on Merida developed a new technique because she was like, “How do I get these curls that look the way the art director wants or the director wants?” She’s like, “I really need a curling iron.” So she actually built in the computer a curling iron where she could change the sizes of the cylinder, the length and stuff, so she could curl the curves around that.

The length of her curl, if you were to pull it straight, will measure out 4 feet long. Merida herself is only five four, so she has really long hair. It’s fifteen hundred hand-placed, sculpted curves. So that’s a lot of time in the wig-making process… all of these different colors (below) actually represent different layers of her hair, kind of like you would in Photoshop… in the end it’s a 111,000 curves that get rendered on her head.

But several together become monotonous. Listen to what is happening. The writing is getting boring. The sound of it drones. It’s like a stuck record. The ear demands some variety. Now listen. I vary the sentence length, and I create music. Music. The writing sings. It has a pleasant rhythm, a lilt, a harmony. I use short sentences. And I use sentences of medium length. And sometimes, when I am certain the reader is rested, I will engage him with a sentence of considerable length, a sentence that burns with energy and builds with all the impetus of a crescendo, the roll of the drums, the crash of the cymbals—sounds that say listen to this, it is important.”

- Gary Provost (via danceabletragedy)

pixartimes:

Teenage girls widely agree that they get the message loud and clear that masturbation is something boys do, but girls don’t, can’t, or shouldn’t. The cultural focus on intercourse tells young women to expect they’ll begin to experience sexual pleasure once they have sex with a man (whether or not they’re even interested in sex with men). Nearly all teen boys, on the other hand, experience sexual pleasure long before they get their hands—or other body parts—into a partner’s pants. Despite the massive advances in women’s equality, young women’s sexuality is stuck in a surprising paradox. Young women are sold provocative clothes but aren’t taught where to find their own clitoris. Many girls give their boyfriends oral sex, but are too uncomfortable with their own bodies to allow the guys to return the favor. It’s still a radical act to say that women need and deserve access to information about their own sexual pleasure—not just about the risks and negative consequences of sex.”

- Dorian Solot, I Love Female Orgasm: An Extraordinary Orgasm Guide.
The best campaign counter-attack video I HAVE EVER SEEN. Obama 2012

”So we’re going to call their BS when we see it and we need your help to call them on it too and set the record straight. So share this, tweet it, facebook it, I keep hearing about tumblr and whatever that is…please use that too. Thank you.”

Accurate gif is accurate

Reblogging because Obama’s campaign team seems to be full of logical, non-alarmist grown-ups this year, and it makes me happy. I think this is the calmest, most direct campaign ad I’ve ever seen. No digs or accusations, except to say “The other guys are factually out of line.”

If only politics were always this sane. (Hahahaha, what. I wish.)

A breakdown of attack campaigns done RIGHT. Seriously, if there’s anything I can do that DOES stick with my peer group, it is that I want to get you all out there and voting. Vote your heart, and vote smart. Consider this video.

Holy shit. Way to sweep the fucking floor, Obama’s staff. Make more of these every day. Please. You’re beautiful people.

For those following the Tumblr notes, the English version is now online!

Queer (English Version)

Love love love love love love love love love this artist.

Erika moen is one of the greatest inspirations in my life, for my art and for my identity. She gave me confidence in being trans, and validation in my identity being my buisness, and hope that I can make my own life with my art and the people I love.

And this? Goddamned kickass. Just… lays it out beautifully flat. I use queer a lot because… I shouldn’t have to explain that I’m a transman who likes all kinds of people and is in love with a woman.

Thank you, Erika.

This means so much to me, thank you <:)

This reminds me of the finale of Boston Legal, where the Gay and Lesbian League try to prevent the two main male characters from marrying, because it’s a marriage of convenience and not of love. Such beautiful irony and hypocrisy expressed in that episode…when two straight men have to fight for the right to marry because homosexuals believe that their union would lessen the validity of gay marriage, just as gay couples now have to fight for the right to marry because some straight people are afraid it will lessen the validity of their unions.

There’s also a good scene from Kissing Jessica Stein about this exact subject, where a character is told that her new-found lesbianism is “an affront to gay people.”

I love my husband, I’d love him even if he weren’t bound to me by law, and the relationships that other people choose to have in this country cannot affect that any more than they can affect the value of my soul in the eyes of any God in which I do or do not choose to believe.

It’s the same with labels. What you choose to be, or who you choose to do, or how you choose to label yourself does not have an effect on what I enjoy or whom I enjoy. Labeling someone is not for the benefit of that person, it’s for the benefit of those who know that person, so they know how comfortable to be around them…how to treat them…how to avoid them…how to think about them.

Sometimes I think if we removed all labels entirely, we might have a genuinely meritocratic society, in which how good/polite/generous/sexy/fun/kind/compassionate a person is would dictate how close we become to them, rather than whether or not their preferences fit my paradigm.

I don’t want to become one of those crazy couples who remove gender roles from my kids entirely and doesn’t even tell our friends whether our kid is a boy or a girl…but if my son one day tells me that he thinks he was meant to be born a girl, I’ll start calling him “her.” I will have to re-orient my thinking, and that is always an adjustment that takes time. But I will do it gladly, because I’d much rather have a kid who knows who s/he is and broadcasts that to the world, than a kid who allows the world to dictate who s/he is.

How we’re born is a starting point, it’s a template, a blueprint. It’s something to build on, not a finished structure. Where we go after day one should be up to us, and us alone.

ericalba:
